{"id":14,"date":"2021-06-07T23:00:45","date_gmt":"2021-06-07T23:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kansascityoa-org.oaregion4.org\/kansascityoa\/?page_id=14"},"modified":"2026-07-24T15:49:53","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T20:49:53","slug":"terms-and-slogans","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/kansascityoa.org\/?page_id=14","title":{"rendered":"Terms and Slogans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is a list of terms and slogans you may hear in a meeting<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Abstinence \u2013 when members say that they are \u201cabstinent,\u201d it means that they are not eating compulsively or engaging in compulsive food behaviors, including binge eating, binging and purging, restricting food, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sponsor \u2013 When we decided that the program was a good fit for us, we chose to begin working with a sponsor, a person who acts as a mentor who guides us through the 12 Steps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meetings \u2013 Meetings are a way to connect with other members and get strength and solutions during discussions on topics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HP, Higher Power, God \u2013 You will hear references to God or a Higher Power (HP) during meetings. The 12 Steps are spiritual in nature, but we are not affiliated with any religious practice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Serenity Prayer \u2013 God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anonymity \u2013 Within the Fellowship, anonymity means that whatever we share with another OA members will be held in respect and confidence. What we hear at meetings should remain there. Another aspect of anonymity is that we are all equal in the Fellowship, whether we are newcomers or seasoned long-timers. And our outside status makes no difference in OA; we have not stars or VIPs.
